The Evolution of our Blueberry Experience

The owners and developers of Mamaku Blue "Blueberry Wine" planted their blueberry orchard in 1982. Originally planning to supply the fresh export blueberry market. This option still exists and consumes approximately one third of their production. Alternative Markets were sought to balance the risk of having all your blueberries in one basket. A healthy, free flow frozen blueberry market was developed and for several years winemaking was an engaging hobby practised with surplus fruit of various varieties, textures and qualities made into a selection of wine styles. 1994 saw the first real development of blueberry wine with larger vintages being made in 60 litre barrels consolidating on past experience and results. As with the original orchard development, Harry and Anne sought the best N.Z. advisers, studied International developments and travelled overseas to extend their research on opportunities for blueberries, be they for fresh, processing, or wine. The first real commercial sized volume of blueberry wine was produced in 1996 and the decision to launch into the fruit wine-making arena became a reality. Extensive study and research through N.Z. Berryfruit Winemakers Association and assistance from top producing members resulted in the development of a brand and label "Mamaku Blue". Marketing to date has been confined to Rotorua because as a boutique label Mamaku Blue has some local significance, respect and appreciation. The need to develop a base market was required and Rotorua has a progressive tourism sector and diverse population. 1999 saw both the Mamaku Blue medium and sweet wines awarded silver medals. At the Mamaku Blue winery Harry and Anne now make 1000kg vintages after the busy harvest season. Each vintage contains between 1.2 and 1.4 million individually hand-picked blueberries harvested at their peak condition. Hand picking of the orchard extends from 1 January to 20 April each year with some 36-40 million berries harvested. Fermentation is carefully nurtured and monitored for about 25 days till the first racking. Subsequent racking and filtering is done at the winery before the whole vintage is sent for bottling and labelling in a commercial plant. Being a small and specialised operation, quality and personal attention are paramount to the winery's development and whilst interest has been shown from several overseas companies in our blueberry wine, we have yet to take the next bold step into national or international marketing. Mamaku Blue is not a red wine. Mamaku Blue is a Blueberry berryfruit wine. Capturing the pure rich blueberry spice, Mamaku Blue wine is made in three distinct styles-dry, medium and sweet. It has a clean, satisfying taste, contains 13 per cent Alcohol and is suitable for all occasions, be it for luncheon, before meals with nibbles, with any main course, especially red or white meats, or just as a delightful climax with or after your dessert.

Mamaku Blue is best served at room temperature though many have enjoyed extending its attractions by changing the presentation to suit the mood of the occasion. Best served in 50mm port glasses, you sip, savour and enjoy. Once you have discovered the unique, subtle blueberry difference, you will always ask for a second serving.
